P.S. 91 Tigers begin season with 2 wins in a row!
By Mr. Pagan, P.S. 91x
The Tigers defeated P.S. 59's basketball quintet with a score of 30-28 in a hard fought game at the renovated P.S. 91 gymnasium on Friday, January 20th. The seesaw contest saw numerous lead changes with both teams trading baskets almost at will during the first half. Donte, P.S. 91's point guard, set the tone early for P.S. 91 by keeping defenders off-balance with multiple fast drives to the basket followed by methodical possessions where he walked the ball up the court. He showed great unselfishness as the team's primary ball-handler by sharing the ball with his teammates and not taking the majority of the field goal attempts. It was his disposition to share the ball that led to Maurice taking and making the most baskets in the game. Donte constantly looked for Maurice in the corners and Maurice quickly scored the ball with his very fast shot release. The 2 shortest players on the court came up big in the first half and P.S. 91 won it with a score of 19-17.
The second half was another story. Both teams shore up their defense and scoring became a struggle. They only scored 11 points each. P.S. 59 was determined to get the ball out of Donte's hands. They were frequently successful. They trapped him by sending two defenders whenever he had the ball. He beat the double-teams by passing the ball to open teammates but it often led to unforced turnovers with teammates either traveling with the ball or making ill-advised passes. Thankfully for the home team, Mershel and Mekhi came alive in the last minutes of the second half and helped the Tigers go ahead in the scoreboard.
With 4 minutes left Mershel grabbed a defensive rebound and went coast to coast for a contested layup. He missed the shot but didn't give up on the play. He grabbed the offensive rebound and made a put-back giving the Tigers the lead - a lead they would not squander. On the ensuing possession Mekhi made a hook shot giving the Tigers their biggest lead in the second half - a 4 point advantage. Mekhi's 2-point shot, as it turns out, were the last points P.S. 91 would score in the game. They would not need to score again. Their hellacious defense only allowed P.S. 59 to only score one 2 point basket the rest of the contest and the Tigers came out on top 30-28.
The Tigers are now 2-0 in the After-School Athletic Program (ASAP) league. They had previously defeated P.S. 226 on January 13, 2017. Their next Home game will be agaisnt P.S. 396 on January 27, 2017. Their first Away game will be on February 3rd, 2017 at P.S. 280.
