Learn about our wonderful ENL Saturday Program.

Program Overview

P.S. 91 is hosting an exciting eight-week Saturday Program for students who have recently immigrated to the United States. The program called ENL ( English as a New Language) runs from January 28 to April 1 (some Saturdays are off due to holidays). There are five classes for grades 1-5, each run by a different teacher. The schedule for every class, however, looks similar. From 8:30-9:00am, students gather in the cafeteria to enjoy a balanced breakfast. At 9:00, teachers take their students to their classrooms to start learning! This part of the day includes practice with English speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills. The goal of the program is to help students with limited English proficiencies become acclimated to the language, as well as American culture. The program concludes with lunch in the cafeteria at 11:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Saturday Program with Ms. Beccia: Valentine’s Day Edition

By Ms. Beccia, P.S. 91x

Every week I work hard to ensure that the Saturday Program is engaging for my second-grade students. The theme of Saturday, February 11th’s class was Valentine’s Day, so the activities involved hearts, candy, and tons of fun! The students first watched a short video that introduced Valentine’s Day facts, such as how many boxes of chocolates are bought every year for the special occasion. Then, I read Amelia Bedelia’s First Valentine aloud to the class, which listened carefully to the cute and quirky story. Before getting into the more academic side of the things, the class wiggled out their jitters to Spread Love, a guided dance video from Zumba Kids.

Next, the students were partnered up with peer at a similar reading level. They took turns reading to each other from books of their choice. At the same time, I worked with a small group of students that needed basic phonics practice. After 20 minutes, everybody reconvened for a mini-lesson on parts of speech. I illustrated the difference among nouns, verbs, adjectives and prepositions. Then students were each given two cards to place under the four categories. This got the kids ready for an exhilarating sorting activity: the first team to place Valentine’s Day words under their correct part of speech wins a prize!  After several attempts, one team had correctly placed all the words and received their Valentine’s Day pencils (later, everybody got a pencil ☺).

The fun continued as students received assignments tailored to their English proficiencies. While some students worked on sight-word coloring activities (sight words are basic words that students should know as soon as they see them), others answered reading comprehension questions about a Valentine’s Day passage. Before heading to lunch, we all enjoyed heart-shaped donuts and reflected on what we learned during the Program.
