As soon as Mr. Groban entered the auditorium, the Select Choir students were overcome with excitement. Select Choir started the workshop with a number they have previously performed, “Everlasting Melody”. Next, the choir showed Mr.Groban their progress on a piece they are preparing for the spring concert, “Hallelujah”. He gave the choir tips on listening to each other when singing, and creating a perfect balance between the melody and harmony parts of the piece. The choir then invited  Mr. Groban onto the stage to sing a verse of “Hallelujah” together, which was stunningly beautiful and one of the most memorable moments of our time together.

Students in the Select Choir then had the chance to ask Mr. Groban questions. Students asked impressive and thoughtful questions like “how can our experiences singing in choir help us to be more successful in other areas?” and “how do I overcome being shy?” Mr. Groban replied by saying “I think sometimes you continue to be shy, sometimes you keep shyness with you. Sometimes those of us who are performers are a little shy off the stage, but being on stage making music gives us an opportunity not to be shy.”

Students were eager to ask questions and learn from one of the most accomplished  singers in the world.

The Select Choir ended the workshop by singing a section of “I Sing Because I’m Happy.” Josh Groban’s visit to the P.S. 91 Select Choir was an outstanding achievement, and will be remembered forever. The Select Choir has a few more exciting performances this year starting in May, and we are looking forward to seeing you!
