Life Imitates Art at Second Grade Spelling Bee!
By Ms. A. Rodriguez, P.S. 91X
During English Language Arts the second grade is reading a book called Kids Excel. Each section tells about different kids who excel at what they do. When you excel at something, you are good at it. Some of them excel at sports like running or jumping. Some of them excel in math. Some of them excel at skipping rocks or standing on their hands. All of them are good at something.
We read the exciting story of how Gail Day, the dark horse, surprised everyone and won the spelling bee. The second grade was inspired to have their own spelling bee. Each class held their own spelling bee and the top five spellers in each class were invited to participate in the Second Grade Spelling Bee.
Ms. Mamara explained the rules to the contestants. Every contestant spelled the first two rounds of words correctly. The audience supported their classmates by silent cheering for words spelled correctly and clapping for their classmates when they were eliminated.
Finally, we were down to the final three: Sapphire from Class 2-320, Irfan from class 2-207, and Safiatou from class 2-207. The final three were such good spellers, they finished all the words on the 2nd grade list! In the end, Sapphire came in third place, Safiatou was the runner-up and Irfan was the winner.
A special thank you to Ms. J for organizing this event. A great time was had by all. We hope this inspires you to excel at what you do!
