By Mr. Levine, P.S. 91X
The 2017-2018 P.S. 91X Boys Basketball Team is just past the midpoint of their season. The boys have had a lot of pressure on them to duplicate last year's success and bring home a Championship trophy. So far the boys have been up to the challenge. The team is 5-1 at this point and their only loss was to last year's runner-up P.S. 280 who, it turned out, had been playing some 6th-grade students.
Led by our returning players, Maurice Hartley, Jhustin Viloria and Nestor Martinez the team has had some big wins. Nestor is the league's best rebounder and gives the team poise and extra chances. Maurice leads the team in scoring and is a calming influence and quiet leader. Jhustin is our best 2-way player excelling on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court. In addition, exciting newcomers have made great contributions this year. Ahnaf Zaman is a terrific athlete who is learning the game amazingly quickly.
Issa Tounkara brings a very intelligent presence to the team and is great defensively. Savian Carino is the starting point guard who is getting better with each game and is learning how to lead a team the right way. Zahid Hossain is the most improved player so far this year. Jair Garcia has moved into the starting lineup with his excellent all-around play and continues to make clutch plays for the team. Craig Stanley and Yael Reynoso are playing very important minutes and bring athleticism and toughness to their play while learning how to help the team in all facets of the game. In addition, the two fourth graders, Leon Hull and Giovanni Bailon, are showing a lot of improvement and will help lead the team next year.
The boys have done so many things well so far this year. They are unselfish and pass the ball a lot. They work hard on defense. There are areas they need to improve on but I am confident that, with time, they will get better in all facets of the game. We have already clinched a playoff spot and I look forward to their competing hard and well the rest of the season and making it to the final game. The next game is this Friday, at home, the following game is a road game on Valentines Day. We wil complete the season in March. I am proud of them but want them to work harder to become as good as they can possibly be.
