P.S. 91 Boys Basketball Team Wins Big!

By Mr. Levine, P.S. 91x

On Friday, March 3, the P.S. 91 Boys Basketball team traveled to P.S. 226 for a rematch with a team we played the very first game of the season. In January we won 48-22. Before this game, I told my team to be ready because their team would be much better than they were the first time we played them. And, they were much better. However, we were MUCH, much better than we were the first time we played them and it showed. This time, we won 63-26.

The boys played terrific defense, moved the ball extremely well on offense, rebounded like animals and played the most complete game we have ever played. Additionally, I believe 63 points is a PS 91 record. Every single player on our team made significant contributions to the victory. Almost every player scored, every player had at least one amazing assist and all played inspired defense. We were led by Donte S. who not only scored a lot of points but also made some amazing assists to our big men under the basket. Mershel, a dominant athlete, rebounded well, scored some big early baskets and made great decisions. Starters Omar and Junior also made some beautiful passes to set up teammates and scored great baskets. Maurice drove to the basket often getting fouled and made free throws. Jorby made some amazing shots and passes to lead the second squad. Donte M. played point guard down the stretch and played sensationally. Mekhi was a calming influence on the team, controlled the pace and made great plays. Jhustin made some big outside shots and stopped their point guard when we needed him to. Nestor was huge on the boards corralling every rebound and had some big put-backs. Marquis played his best game of the year and came away with a few baskets that excited the team. Luis, also scored, played great defense with some steals that led to fast-breaks and beautiful hoops. Vladimir did everything well and contributed in every facet of the game. I also would like to thank our team manager Junior Fabian who did all the scoring and stayed composed in an opponent’s school. He has been invaluable to our team.

Overall, our outside shots were falling, our decision-making was terrific and our energy level very high. I am so proud of our team. We have a lot of hard work ahead of us because the next 2 games are against very tough opponents. If we can build on what we have done so far, I like our chances.
